Case study: cultural competence e-learning module

Who: Tai Pawb, the people who advance equality & social justice in the housing sector in Wales.

The brief: To turn the Cultural Competence half day session that I developed and delivered in-house into e-learning content – a short introduction module designed to be followed up with a reflection and discussion session, held face to face or online.

What I did: I adapted the materials developed for an interactive 3 hour session delivered in person, and focused on the key concepts (cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, and cultural competence). I developed a suite of slides as visual supports, and a script which would be recorded by Tai Pawb staff and last no more than 30 minutes. I built in quizzes and learning verification activities, and drafted a follow-up workshop outline.

My reflections: When I deliver in person I rely on … well, me! to bring the content to life and make it interesting – my slides have supporting content but they’re not always super fancy. The challenge here was making really engaging and polished slides to accompany the narrative, and I created custom diagrams and icons so that the materials are unique. The narrative also needed to be focused yet detailed enough, as it needs to communicate the topic effectively, without the option of clarification questions or comments in a live session.
