Case study: how to have difficult conversations (learning session)

Who:Barod, who provide support to people and their families around drug and alcohol use.

The brief: As part of a developmet day for directors, service managers, managers and team leaders across te organisation, I ran a 2-hour session on the topic of “having difficult conversations”. It needed to include how to give and receive feedback, and addressing behaviours early so they don’t escalate into HR issues. It was an in-person session with approximately 55 people.

What I did:I offered a toolkit for difficult conversations which included understanding the dynamics of conflict (including different styles, and various models), a process for personal reflection and preparing for difficult conversations, and tools to carry out the conversations.

What they said:I received some nice unsolicited feedback by email. “I thoroughly enjoyed your session, I have been thinking about it a lot, particularly this morning on my walk with my dog. I will be better equipped when having tricky conversations now…”
