The Toll (2021)

Welsh Stories, Welsh Talents: What’s Next for Welsh Film?
(Originally published in The Welsh Agenda online, 5th November 2021)

Rather randomly through my social networks, I heard about a Welsh film called “The Toll” which had been filmed in Pembrokeshire, and I watched it online as part of the 2021 Glasgow Film Festival. It was a delight and I was immediately obsessed.

I manufactured the opportunity for me to talk to Matt Redd (the writer) and Ryan Andrew Hooper (the director) about their experience in making the film and more broadly about the film industry in Wales.

The (rather long) article was published in The Welsh Agenda online, on 5th November 2021. Follow the link to read it in full.

The Toll film poster: Michael Smiley stands in front of a small prefab toll booth and barrier on a deserted coastal road. Inserts show portraits of Annes Elwy as the local police officer, Michael Smiley, Iwan Rheon, and Paul Kaye with a collection of badges on his woolly hat. Other credits include Julian Glover and Steve Oram. The title "The TOLL" appears in large yellow letters, textured like road line paint. Underneath the tagline reads: "everybody pays".
